How much does it cost?

This is the question that concerns all of us. But it is a difficult one to answer because there are so many differences between books. It is our commitment to you that, when your book is finished, it will meet the high quality standards of the publishing industry. To accomplish this goal, we offer a wide variety of services for our authors. These services include: editing, copyediting, interior design and production, cover design and production, proof reading, and printing and binding.

Every author has different needs and each book is an individual creation. The amount of effort needed to take a manuscript and get it ready for production can not be determined without an in-depth evaluation. Because of the uniqueness of each manuscript, Groundbreaking Press provides each author customized cost estimates. The process begins when you submit your manuscript to us for evaluation.

For a complete description of the Publishing Process, see the Tutorial.

Manuscript Evaluation
Publishing Packages

Manuscript Evaluation

Even though Groundbreaking Press is an author-services company where the author pays for services rendered, we do not publish every book that comes our way. The first step in our process is an evaluation of your manuscript and whether or not it's ready for us to become involved. There are times when we tell the author that much work is needed before we can even begin the editing phase. We, of course, can help an author with manuscript preparation and will be glad to provide an estimate of the cost once we have seen the manuscript. However, most of our authors prefer to complete the manuscript on their own, once they have received our comments and suggestions for completion.. With some authors, we have even recommended that they take advantage of subsidy presses or vanity publishers.

Once we've determined that your book is ready for us, we will present you with a proposal that describes fully the services and costs associated with producing your finished book. The cost of the Manuscript Evaluation is $500. Contact Brad Fregger if you would like to discuss having your manuscript evaluated. In our opinion, this will be the best $250 you will have spent regarding your book and its completeness; its readiness to begin the publishing process.

At the end of the evaluation process, we will discuss with you which of our three publishing packages would best meet your needs.

Publishing Packages

We are committed to helping you produce a finished book that you and yours will be extremely proud of.  You may be writing your book for posterity, only interested in sharing your story with your grandchildren and great-grandchildren, with no thought for a broad readership; or, you may be a professional and are writing a book to share your knowledge, thereby increasing your credibility; or, you may have just written the  next great American novel and want to be sure that it's production quality reflects the time and energy you have put into the manuscript.

Groundbreaking Press has three basic publishing packages to meet your needs: Special Interest, Professional, National Distribution. All three packages produce custom books that meet the high-quality standards of the publishing industry. As we've stated above, the exact cost of production for each book will be different. The descriptions below will give you an idea as to what you might expect from each of the packages.

Special Interest

For the author whose book will have limited distribution or is targeted for a well-defined niche. It might be a memoir with interest limited to family, friends, and others who might have an historical interest in the book. Or, it may be a novel that the writer wants to see published but doesn't have the time or resources to promote the book at the level needed for national distribution. The Special Interest Package includes:

  • Editing for clarity, consistency, completeness, redundancy, and verbiage

  • Copyediting for grammatical correctness, content consistency, and redundancy (three copyediting cycles)

  • Obtaining ISBN, Library of Congress number, bar-code, and listing in Books in Print

  • Custom interior and cover design (three cover alternatives)

  • Final proof-reading

  • Set-up with POD, including 10 copies of the book

Professional

For the professional writing to increase credibility and to provide information and insight to their readers. We estimate that the credibility achieved with publishing a  quality book in an area of expertise, is comparable to the credibility achieved with a graduate degree. The Professional Package includes:

  • Editing for clarity, consistency, completeness, redundancy, and verbiage

  • Copyediting for grammatical correctness, content consistency, and redundancy (five copyediting cycles)

  • Obtaining ISBN, Library of Congress number, bar-code, and listing in Books in Print

  • Custom interior and cover design alternatives (two interior, five covers)

  • Final proof-reading (two final proof-reading cycles)

  • Set-up with POD, including 10 copies of the book

  • Printing and binding alternatives, based on: final interior design, inclusion of photographs, and number of copies needed.

National Distribution

For books with national audience potential and the author is committed to the time and resources needed to promote the book. You might be the author of that great American novel, or a speaker with the potential for national interest, or, you might have a story that many will be interested in reading. The National Distribution Package includes:

  • Editing for clarity, consistency, completeness, redundancy, verbiage, and "red flags"

  • Copyediting for grammatical correctness, content consistency, and redundancy (seven copyediting cycles)

  • Obtaining ISBN, Library of Congress number, bar-code, and listing in Books in Print

  • Custom interior and cover design alternatives (three interior, seven covers)

  • Final proof-reading (three final proof-reading cycles)

  • Set-up with POD, including 10 copies of the book

  • Printing and binding alternatives, based on: final interior design, inclusion of photographs, and number of copies needed. Author will need to commit to printing a minimum of 1500 copies.

  • National distribution through major distributors (Ingram, Baker & Taylor, and Quality). (This alternative is dependent upon the book being accepted for national distribution by our distribution partner. The vast majority of our National Distribution Package books are accepted.)
